The Victorian Railways built 80 bogie brake vans for use on passenger and freight trains in the 1960’s. These were originally coded ZF, but were later re-coded to ZLP. The vans were of wooden construction and were painted in VR carriage red. They had freight compartments at each end of the wagon, and could carry a payload of ten tonnes. The centre compartment of the wagon was fitted out with a seat and desk for the guard, a wood-fired stove and a toilet compartment. There were two periscopes on the roof for observation of the train ahead. They were withdrawn from use when guard’s vans were no longer required on trains.
